Writing Prompt: Write down five different story ideas in 150 words or less. Generate these ideas from these five sources:

  • From an interview or conversation you’ve had
  • From research you’ve done (reading science news, military history, etc)
  • From observation (go for a walk!)
  • From a piece of media (watch a movie)
  • From a piece of music (with or without lyrics)

This exercise might not generate the very best ideas you’ve ever had, but it will definitely flex your idea muscles in new ways.

I’ve started with the fifth point on the list; from a piece of music. Those who know me knows that I love music.

So today at work, I had my favorite country radio channel on when Tim Hicks’ She Don’t Drink Whiskey Anymore came up.

I was done for. The story would involve whiskey. I didn’t know how yet, but it had to be an important feature.

So I kept working and thinking about it.

And then my muse came to me with a solution piece; “The Devil’s Drink.” A quick search gave me a bunch of result about a woman who believe the Monster energy drink is actually the devil’s drink, and one lost result for a Toronto Celtic music group. Not exactly what i was looking for, but okay.

I went back to the drawing board so to speak, and came up with;

Whiskey-drinking heartbroken demon falls for the human-reincarnation of a past lover destined to become an angel.

I wasn’t particularly happy with the idea, though. When I came up with the whiskey drinking demon, I knew I didn’t want it to involve angels in any way. I already have a series/universe that involves angels and demons in the work.

But I still liked the whiskey-drinking heartbroken demon part of it.

The idea precised itself when I was walking home after work.

The hard thing with Hell isn’t the suffocating heat or the demonic dry skin, but rather the condemnation of repeating the same mistakes and getting the same result. A eternity of falling in love and of being betrayed by them. Over and over again. If I could rip my own heart, I would. But that would be too simple. All I can do for now, is to guard it, and make sure the next demon who approach me won’t get an hold on it.

And this, is the first idea I came up with.
See you on Friday,

New Weekly Posts – The Writing Excuses Master Class https://www.mchoule.com/new-weekly-posts-the-writing-excuses-master-class/ https://www.mchoule.com/new-weekly-posts-the-writing-excuses-master-class/#respond Tue, 20 Jan 2015 00:18:46 +0000 http://www.mchoule.com/?p=1116 One of my good friend, Helga mentioned the Writing Excuses podcast enough times for me to get interested. The hosts and their guests are brilliants (as oppose of what their tag line pretends), and I’ve listen to most of the nine first seasons. The fifteen minutes format is perfect for on the go.
They are doing things a bit different for their tenth season. Every podcast of this season will bring you closer to a finish project. You can have more on that by visiting their website.

I really advice to listen the podcast.

Every Friday from now on, I will be posting my progress on the class. Because we’re already two episodes in, and that I may write multiple posts per homework, or some homework could be longer than what I can do in once sitting, my progress won’t be posted in real time. It should, however, made it easier for me to be consistent in posting.

Now, that being said, I will see you Friday, where I’ll talk about some story ideas.
Hugs&Kisses,
MC
